One of the sweetest things about playing for a college softball squad are the milestones throughout a season. For the Lady Demons, the last game of the series gained a sweep at Incarnate Word as well as a stunning conclusion; E.C. Delafield notched a no-hitter in collection with her win on Saturday. NSU takes the top spot in the conference just above Stephen F. Austin and Southeastern Louisiana.
Donald Pickett and the Lady Demons stand 6-0 in SLC play. Most of the runs in the series consisted of a 17-0 win in 5 innings on game two of Friday’s doubleheader. Prior to the three-point win in the first game, the second game fueled Northwestern State’s momentum heading into Delafield’s no hitter to wrap up the series.
With the dominance from hard hitters on offense, Delafield takes home the spoils with a grand no hitter on Saturday. “She pretty much dominated the game for seven innings,” Pickett said. “She did a really good job commanding the zone. She mixed speeds. We were able to work both sides the plate. She had her best stuff, and we made a couple nice plays behind her.” Since Micaela Bouvier in 2015, no one has seen a no-hitter from the Lady Demons. Saturday’s contest made this no easier as they were competing in away territory.
Delafield and the Demons look to keep the lead spot on SLC standings next weekend. Despite early cancelations, this young squad hopes to pull through to new heights with Houston Baptist, another SLC Rival, traveling to Natchitoches for a three-game series starting this Friday. Hard hitters, persistent pitchers, and marvelous momentum can keep the dazzling Demons to a higher pace as the season progresses.
