The Department of Creative and Performing Arts showcases their freshman class in their annual production “New Faces.”

“New Faces” is a production directed by the seniors of the department for the incoming freshman to have a chance of performing on stage. This production’s purpose is to help  freshman meet upperclassman in the department and for them to showcase what talents they obtain.

Artistic and Production Director, Payton Hartwick, and the members of her directing board decided on a medley composed of songs from “Legally Blonde the Musical” to incorporate an equal opportunity for singers, dancers and actors in the opening number of the show.

“It’s not about me, and it’s not about the board, it’s about making every individual person feel like they had their own moment on stage,” Hartwick said. This statement truly reflected in the performance of not only the ensemble, numbers but each individual performance as well.

The show was a two-and-a-half-hour-long cabaret filled with each “New Face” participant giving a 2 minute or less performance of their choice. With help from their upperclassman coach they devised a performance to impress the audience.

Freshman musical theatre concentrator, Dawne Lege, said, “I had a lot of fun.. I was extremely nervous but other than that it was amazing.”

This annual performance has been done by every freshman class for years on years now in the department. When asked if the department would be different without the “New Faces” show, Hartwick replied,” I don’t think our department would be as strong or a family unit because this where the seniors get to know the freshman and transfer students. It also instills a work ethic into them very quickly because “New Faces” begins your first week of school.”

When Lege was asked this question she replied with,” Definitely! I don’t think the freshman class would be as close without “New Faces.”
